Etymology

The oldest spellings represent OE  *Pællingas 'Pælli's people'.The pers.n. Pælli is found in LVD (OET 163). v. DEPN, PN-ing 59 f. Ekwall alternatively suggests that the base may be OE  *pall , *peall 'raised place, ledge', corresponding to OScand  pallr , if it could be used in the sense 'shore, bank', but he considers this a less likely alternative than derivation from the pers.n. Pælli .
