Etymology

The spellings suggest that the OE  origin is oxna edisc 'the pasture of the oxen', v. oxa , gen. plur. oxna , and edisc .

Archaeological excavations of the extensive Roman settlement mentioned under Brampton supra have shown that it comprised also parts of the neighbouring parish of Oxnead.
