Etymology

'Malti's '. The first el. is the ODan  pers.n. Malti . Such a name would seem to have been known in England in the late OE  period, judging by two charters referring to L, though only preserved in late copies: Guelphus fil. Malti 806 (16 Sawyer 162) BCS 325 and Geolphus fil. Maltae 833 (16 Sawyer 189) BCS 409.The vocalization of -al - to -au - is to be explained as due to AN influence (Zachrisson 146, IPN 113); d for t (Maudebi , etc.) is due to the following b (assimilation). Cf. Maltby in Y (PN YNR 171, PN YWR I 137). There are moreover two Maltbys in L. v. also Sandred 1988: 15 and Insley 296 f.

The aisle of the parish church of St Peter and St Paul, in which there was a monument commissioned by Margaret Paston, has unfortunately not survived (v. Pevsner 194 f.).
