Etymology

This may be the gen. of a group-name in -ingas, formed from a pers.n. *Ytra or *Ytri , which may be derived from OE  oter 'otter' (cf. Otterden K), originally a nickname, followed by hām , i.e. 'the hām of *Ytra 's people'. Alternatively the first element may be an ing -derivative from OE  ȳterra 'outer', but it is not clear what a name meaning 'the hām of the people living outside' would imply. Cf. DEPN, Mills, PN-ing 136.
