Etymology

The first element is no doubt an OScand pers.n., OWScand , ODan  Gunni , OSwed  Gunne , which is early recorded and very common in Denmark and Sweden. As a compound of an OScand pers.n. and OE  tūn, Gunton belongs to the so-called Grimston hybrids (v. Lind, DGP 1 and Insley 165).

In DB Gunton is assessed, among other things, at one carucate for a berewick at Shipden (DB 194 b).
