Etymology

The ON, ODan pers.n. Gunni, OSwed  Gunne, a short weakly inflected form of masc. names in Gunn -, and þorp . This is the traditional explanation (v. DEPN and Mills). Insley (159, 165 f.) also gives evidence for the existence of an OScand fem. name Gunna , but this hardly concerns us here.
