Etymology

The gen. plur. of a group-name in -ingas (Ban (n )inga -) followed by hām , to be translated 'the hām of *Ban (n )a 's people' or 'the followers of *Ban (n )a ', an old type of name quite common in East Anglia (cf. Antingham in North Erpingham Hundred supra ). The OE  pers.n. *Ban (n )a is not independently recorded but has the Continental counterparts OHG  Bano , Banno (DEPN, Mills, PN -ing 132). A form Hamingeham in DB has been identified with Banningham.
