Etymology

OE  þyrne 'thorn-bush' or ON  þyrnir, with the same meaning.Substitution of T - for Th - is common in AN spellings (Zachrisson 39 ff., IPN 108). The parish church is dedicated to St Edmund, “the doorway to the nave indicating an early 14th-century date” (Pevsner 331). v. also Thurne Mouth infra .
