Etymology

There is no reason to question the explanation given by Lindkvist (155 f.) and Ekwall (DEPN) that the first el. of this name in - is an OScand pers.n., ODan  Øthi , OSw  Ødhe , OWScand  Auði . v. also Sandred 1988: 15 f. and Insley 81. The early loss of intervocalic ð has been explained as due to AN influence (Zachrisson 82 ff.). Oby is frequently referred to as “vicus et pars” of the village of Ashby. Both villages are long since lost.
