Etymology

Strawberry Hill. Cf. Strawberry Hill Close 1691 Cobbett.Austin Dobson (Horace Walpole 113–4) notes that the house as first built by a retired coachman about 1698 had been nicknamed Chopped Straw Hall , but that Walpole, in looking through some old deeds when he bought the house in 1748 and rebuilt it, found reference in one of the deeds to Strawberry Hill Shot and adopted the name for his new house.
