Etymology

Stadbury (lost) is Stadbury 1302WDB , 1650ParlSurv , 1819 G, c. 1840TA , Stadebery , Staddebury t. Ric 2Rental , Stodbury 1650ParlSurv . In Greenwood's map Stadbury lies by the Thames, so the probabilities are that the name is a compound of stæð and burh , i.e. 'burh by the river-bank.' To what the burh may here refer we do not know. v. Addenda xxxiii.
