Burtonhole Fm is Button Hole 1754 HendonSurv, 1754 R, 1800 Faden, Burton Hole 1819 G. It may be that this is a place- name of the nickname type (v. infra 207), the reference being to a tiny or insignificant homestead. In that case the modern form must be a more dignified re-fashioning.
