Etymology

Botwell is Bote wælle 831 BCS 400, Botewell 1266 Pat, 1274Ass , Boteswell ib., Bodwell c. 1480 ECP, Batwellhethe 1551 FF.BCS 400 is a contemporary text, so that the first element cannot be the reduced gen. sg. of the OE  personal name Bōta . Ekwall suggests (DEPN s. n .) that it may be connected with the OE  word bōt , 'healing, mending, remedy,' bote being a qualifying genitive, the meaning of the compound being 'healing spring,' or the first element may be an unrecorded OE  feminine name Bōt . v. wielle .
