Etymology

Colney Hatch is Colneha (t )che 1492et freq StPauls , 1575 Ipm, Coanie hatch 1593 N, Cony Hatch 1610 Speed, 1675 Ogilby.The hatch was a gate of Enfield Chase (supra 73). The forms are too late for any interpretation of the first element to be possible, but it would seem that the l is original, since it occurs in all the earliest spellings. One might compare Coleherne infra 128.
