Etymology

'Ford over the river Brent' (supra 1). This must have been just above the spot where the Brent joins the Thames, where the main Bath road crosses the stream. The t was early dropped in the consonantal sequence -ntf -, being re-introduced at a later date through the influence of the river-name itself.
