Shift cl North(the sense of shift here,as elsewhere in L f.ns., is uncertain; the term occurs also in Shift Car inBonby(PN L 2, 60) and a Shift Acre in South Ferriby(ib l16), where thesense “each of several crops in a course of rotation” is suggested from NED;as all the references are to meadow land, another sense, that of “shiftingseveralty”, i.e. an annual arrangement of changing occupation of grassland, mayalso be considered)
