Etymology

'Ulf's farmstead or village', from the Scand. pers.n. Ulfr and .It is noteworthy that the first el. has the Scand. gen.sg. [s], as in the identical name Ulceby LSR and other p.ns. in L, like Braceby, Haceby, Laceby, Rauceby and Winceby, and this survives today. One can only presume that this group was given by Scand. speakers, otherwise the pronunciation would have been [z].
