Etymology

'Secondary settlement', v. þorp (ODan  thorp ). Turuluestorp c1115 and Thorelthorp 1254 contain the Scand pers.n. ON  þórólfr , Runic Danish þōrulf R , a name which is attested in Lincolnshire in Domesday Book (Feilitzen 396) and which forms the first el. of the three L examples of the p.n. Thurlby (Calcewath Wapentake LSR, Graffoe and Ness Wapentakes Kest, v. DLPN 127). The affix en les Falous , in le Fallowes , in the Fallows , etc. contains OE  (Angl ) falh 'land broken up for cultivation, ploughed land', here no doubt with the sense 'fallow land' (v. DLPN 126). In this context, it is interesting to note that the affix in Thorp Malesard 1313 is an OFr compound of mal 2 and assart , essart with the sense 'poor cleared land', cf. PN YW 5209 (Kirkby Malzeard). The 1338 form Thorp in Warectis contains MLat  *warecta , warectum 'fallow, fallow land'. Stow St Mary is a neighbouring parish in Well Wapentake LWR.

A map, c1809, is inset in C. W. Foster, A History of the Villages of Aisthorpe and Thorpe in the Fallows (Lincoln, 1927) and is described by Foster as 'Plan of the Glebe found in the Chapel Garth; as agreed by the Minister and the Owner of the Land by which it is surrounded; as on the 29th September, 1819' (see also Aisthorpe supra ). Forms from this map are given below with the notation AisM.
