Etymology

'Brook, stream to the south', v. sūð , brōc , apparently so named because of its position in relation to Scothern (q. v. , cf. DLPN 120). The alternation of -brooke < OE  brōc and -beck < ON  bekkr in the form of 1764 is noteworthy.
