Etymology

This is no doubt a partial Scandinavianization of OE  *Stāntūn 'the farmstead, village on stony ground', v. stān , tūn , with ON  steinn replacing the cognate OE  stān, comparable to Stainton LWR, Stainton by Langworth and Market Stainton LSR, and topographically appropriate. It is described as being near Binbrook, Kirmond, Orford and Thoresway and upon the Wold (v. wald ). The commonest affix is some form of in the Hole 'in the hollow', v. hol 1 , again an exact description of the situation. Though two forms in Valle and valy have been noted c.1300 and 1530, the modern le Vale does not become common till the 19th century.
