Etymology

Ekwall (DEPN s.n) suggests that the first el. is an unrecorded OE  pers.n. *Sprytel . The long list of forms here, however, suggests it is rather an unrecorded OE  pers.n. *Sprēotel , which would be a nickname based on OE  sprēot 'a pole, a spike, a spear'. The meaning of Spridlington would then be 'the farmstead, the village associated with, called after Sprēotel', from the medial connective particle -ing- 'associated with, called after' and OE  tūn.
