Etymology

'The farmstead, village beside the ferry', v. ferja , , a Scand. compound. It is South in contrast to North Ferriby on the opposite bank of the Humber, v. PN YE 214. There are numerous references to the ferry itself, as in passagium de Suth Feriby 1147–67 (m14) Pontefract.
