Etymology

Probably an Anglo-Danish formation from the OE  unrecorded pers.n. *Snytra and ODan  , hence 'Snytra's farmstead, village', as proposed by Ekwall (DEPN s.n.), who suggests that this pers.n. is a derivative of OE  snotor , snytre 'wise'. The same pers.n. has been adduced also for Snetterton (Nf) and Snitterton (PN Db 412). The DB forms with initial prosthetic E- are due to AN influence.
