Etymology

'Skalli's farmstead, village', v. , the first el. being the Scand  pers.n and byname Skalli , a name belonging to ON  skalli masc. 'a bald head, a bald-headed person'. Dr Insley points out that as a pers.n., Skalli is known from ON and OSw, and is quite frequent as a byname in both Iceland and Norway. In Denmark it does not seem to be independently attested, but it forms the first el. of p.ns. in -ruth and -thorp , v. B. Jorgensen, Stednavne ordbog , 2. udgave (Copenhagen, 1994), s.nn. Skallebolle , Skallerup . Note that the early forms of Scawby show the ODan  genitive in -a -. The three forms in -beria are paralleled in the same documents by similar forms for Roxby and Tealby. They are not supported elsewhere and must be considered “sports”. In the neighbouring parish of Broughton we have the forms Scalehou a1176 Goke and Scallehou 1205–23 ib, 'Skalli's mound', v. haugr , the first el. being the same ODan pers.n./byname as in Scawby. No doubt the Skalli of Skal (l )ehou was the same person as the Skalli of Scawby.
