Etymology

'(Place) at the shrubs or at the brushwood.' The base of the name is the dative pl. in -um of OE  hris, ON  hrís, ODan  rīs n. 'shrubs, brushwood'. DLPN 102 includes both the English and the Scand etymons as possible here, while DEPN prefers an English etymology. Cf. also Rise ERY (PN YE 70). In the Old Danish linguistic area, Kristian Hald noted five examples of the corresponding Danish name Risum, v. Hald, De danske Stednavne paa -um (Copenhagen, 1942), 119.

Lands in Grange de Lings, a grange of Barlings Abbey and adjoining Riseholme, have been treated separately in this volume.
