Etymology

The name type Carl (e )ton is common throughout the Danelaw, cf. East Carleton Nf, Carleton Nf (3×), Carleton WRY, Carlton Bd, C, Lei, Nt, Nth, Sf, ERY, NRY, WRY (VEPN 323; cf. also EPN 2 2, s.v. karl ).In L, the type is represented by the examples from Lawress Wapentake, by Carlton le Moorland (Graffoe Wapentake Kest), Carlton Scroop (Loveden Wapentake Kest) and by Castle, Great and Little Carlton (Louthesk Wapentake LSR) (DLPN 28–9). It is generally held to be a scandinavianized form of English place-names of the type Charlton, Chorlton < OE  *ceorlatūn 'village, farm, enclosure of the (free) peasants' (for the meaning see the discussion of VEPN 320–23 and the literature cited there), in which OE  ceorl had been replaced by ON  karl (cf. EPN 2 2). We must also reckon with the influence of Scandinavian names of the type Karlaby , Karl (e )by , Kar (e )by . In Sweden, there are some 35 examples of this name and it is also found in Denmark and Finland, but not in Norway (see Svenskt ortnamnslexikon , ed. M. Wahlberg (Uppsala, 2003), 160–1).
