The earlier name is derived from OE  æcer 'a field, a plot of arable or cultivated land' and the pl. of hol 1 'a hollow'. There are numerous deep hollows here, as well as modern chalk diggings. It was a grange of Newsham Abbey in Brocklesby, PN L 264. There are three forms in which the second el. is holmr 'an island of land, a water-meadow', which seems singularly inappropriate here. By the 16th century -holes had been replaced by house . The grange itself was situated in Claxby parish, the buildings being demolished during the last century and the present farm built to the east in Normanby parish, v. further DB xlvii.
