Etymology

'The farmstead, village of the Norwegians' from the gen.pl. Norðmanna of late OE  Norðmann 'a Northman, a Norwegian' and , indicating an isolated settlement of Norwegians who accompanied the Danes in the settlement of Lincolnshire. The second el. of DB Normanestouu is OE  stōw 'a place, a place of assembly', a form not supported by any later spellings. For Normanby, cf. Normanby le Wold PN L 3, 71–72. There are two more Normanbys in LWR, Normanby in Burton upon Stather and Normanby by Stow. The present example is described as near Spital on the Street, Glentham and Owmby.
