Etymology

The earliest spellings indicate that this is 'the cottages, the sheds or shelters to the south', v. sūð , cot , and that at an early date sūð was replaced by lȳtel 'little'. In both cases the description is in relation to Great Coates immediately to the north. In contrast to the latter only a single spelling has been noted reflecting the dat.pl. form cotum .
