Etymology

'The farmstead, village of the Irishmen', v. Íri (Íra gen.pl.), . The reference is probably to an isolated settlement of Norwegian Vikings from Ireland, or perhaps to Irishmen who accompanied the Vikings to England. Irby is upon Humber in contrast to Irby in the Marsh , LSR. It is also distinguished above as near Laceby and Great Grimsby.
