Etymology

The burial-place, the place dedicated to St Hygebald', v. stōw .Saints c1000 states Đonne resteð sancte Higebold in Lindesige on þare stowe þe is genemnod Cecesege , neah þære ea , þe is genemnod Oncel (i.e. R. Ancolme). The earlier name for Hibaldstow was Cecesege 'Cec's island of land', v. ēg , which is topographically appropriate. The first el. is the OE  pers.n. Cec . The interchange between stōw and stede has only been noted in the early 16th century.

The manors of Hibaldstow were held respectively by the Duchy of Cornwall and by the Biron family, cf. John Biron Esq u1671Red .
