Etymology

Glanford is almost certainly derived from OE  glēam 'revelry, joy, merriment' and ford, probably in the sense 'the ford where sports are held', as suggested by Ekwall (DEPN, s.n. Glandford). The forms in Glaum - and Glaun - are Scandinavianised, showing the influence of ON  glaumr , cognate with glēam, while spellings in -forth (e )- are similarly Scandinavianised forms of ford . To this was added Brigg, from ON  bryggja 'a jetty, a quay', but which here refers to a bridge over the R. Ancholme, as the Latin forms clearly show - note also the 1362 Ipm reference to “the bridge and causeway of Glaunfordbrig ” and also “Hugh atte Brigge of Glamforthebrigge ”1313 Pat. The parish is known as Glanford Brigg, formerly a part of Wrawby; the town is called Brigg.
