Etymology

This appears to be identical with Cawthorpe Kest and Little Cawthorpe LSR, as well as Calthorpe Nf, DEPN s.n. Each is 'Kali's secondary settlement, dependent outlying farmstead' from the Scand. pers.n. Kali and þorp . It was presumably an outlying settlement of Covenham itself. Its site is unknown but it may well lie beneath the recently constructed Covenham Reservoir. From the 14th century onwards the forms show vocalisation of [l] to [w] in all three L examples.
