Etymology

'The farmstead, village at or belonging to a fortified place', v. burh , tūn . The site of the fortification is not known. The earliest forms for the affix, stathel , are presumably derived from OE  staðol 'a foundation, base, support', in p.ns. also 'a platform'. Forms in -stathe are from ON  stǫð 'a landing-place, a jetty', while the rest are derived from stǫðvar , the pl. of stǫð . Stather is found in other parishes bounding on the R. Trent, cf. Flixborough Stather. The landing-places were presumably at Burton Stather on the river a little north-west of the village itself. The market is referred to in mercatum de Burton '1329Ass . In the neighbourhood of Burton are Northstather 1502, 1503 Ipm and South Stachre (-c - for -t -) 1317 Ipm, Southstathere 1347 Pat, Southstather 1503 Ipm; unfortunately the sites cannot be identified.
