Etymology

'The spring frequented by cuckoos', v. gaukr , wella , a hybrid Anglo- Scandinavian name. The site of the Priory here was called eskadal 'a1175 Goke, Eskadal 'Hy2 ib, le aschedale 1487Yarb , 'the valley where ash-trees grow', v. eski , dalr , a Scand compound.
