Etymology

'At the cottages, sheds or shelters', v. æt , cot . dat.pl. cotum , and for the variation in the forms, v. Ekwall, Studies3 31–2. It is Nun from the Cistercian Priory of Nuns founded c.1150. v. also FF ii, lxv and DB liv. Note also æt Lehcotum 852 (12) ASCharters (S 1440), Cotum 1066–8 (12) ASWills. Both have been tentatively identified with Nun Coton or Cotham, and the identification is reasonably certain.
