Etymology

'Ēadrēd's farmstead, village' v. , a hybrid Anglo-Danish p.n. from the OE  pers.n. Ēadrēd and ODan  . There are no traces of the OE  gen.sg. -es in the forms for Atterby and we have examples of -th - indicating Scand influence. It is, therefore, likely that the name was given by Scand settlers. For comparable names v. Audleby (PN L 2, 88), Autby (ib 4, 168) and Barnetby le Wold (ib 2, 9).
