Etymology

It is to be identified with Bernetebi c.1115 LS and Barnetbie a1567 LNQ v, where Barnoldby has been confused with Barnetby le Wold, PN L 2, 8–10.

'Bernulf's farm, village', v. . The first el. is in all probability the ON  pers.n. Biǫrnúlfr , recorded independently in DB from Yorkshire, v. Feilitzen 200, rather than the cognate OE  pers.n. Beornwulf especially taking into consideration the heavy Danish influence in north L.

It is later in the Beck , v. bekkr 'a stream' and it is noteworthy that the form le Beck has not been noted before the early 18th century. v. also the comparative forms for Becklands infra .
