Etymology

According to Ekwall, DEPN s.n., this is ' Áli's farmstead, village', v. . The personal name would then be ON  Áli , ON  Āli , discussed by Fellows-Jensen, SPNYL 9, and by Insley, SPNN 13.It is the first el. also of Ailby LSR and Alby Nf, for which gen.sg. spellings in -es are not found. In Aylesby itself -es presumably represents a secondary ME gen.sg. form.
