Etymology

'The farmstead, village where apples grow', v. æppel , , a hybrid Anglo-Danish compound. It is highly likely, from the situation of the village, that this was originally an English p.n. Appleton in which the second el. tūn 'a farmstead, village, estate' was later replaced by ODan
