Etymology

'Wīgmund's portion of the Wolds district', v. wald . The name refers to a sizeable area of wold country belonging to the Anglo-Saxon Wīgmund . The interesting 1254 form la Wymundeswald (with the OFr  def.art. la , hence 'the wold country of Wīgmund') indicates that even by the middle of the 13th century, the emphasis was still on the land unit rather than on the habitation site which had developed within it. It is possible that Wīgmund was the same magnate who gave his name to the early estate of Wymondham, 15 miles to the east in Framland Hundred (v. Lei 2286), cf. Prestwold supra .
