Etymology

'The village or estate associated with or called after a man named Tyrhtel or Tyrli', v. -ingtūn . The OE  pers.n. Tyrhtel is independently attested, though Tyrli , a presumed derivative of the OE  pers.n. Turla (as in Turlan homm 940 (12) BCS 764 (S 467)), is unrecorded. Because of the township's proximity to Church Langton, East Langton and West Langton, 16th- cent. and later spellings (with eventual metanalysis) have imitated Langton. The substitution of th for t in occasional early forms is the result of AN  orthographical interchange between the symbols th and t for etymological t .
