Etymology

'Þormóðr's village', v. tūn . The common ON  pers.n. Þormóðr is found also in Norway, Iceland, Sweden, Denmark and Normandy, v. SPNLY 311. In a few 13th and 14th cent, spellings for Thurmaston, the pers.n. of the specific has been attracted to the ON  pers.n. Þormundr .Note metathesis of the specific in some 16th, 17th and 18th cent, forms and the typical 17th cent. Leics. loss of t in the group -ston .

A large pagan Anglo-Saxon cremation cemetery has been discovered here, no doubt that of an important early settlement at this site.
