Etymology

Chawntry (Backside of Chauntry 1696 (v. bak - side), Chauntry Close, Chauntry Leys 1696 (v. leys), the Chauntery feild 1601, v. chanterie and The Nanalls infra; land formerly forming part of the endowment for a chantry, a chantry being a fund for the maintenance of a priest whose sole duty was to say mass daily for the souls of the founder and his family)
