Etymology

The p.n. comprises two OE elements, staca and þyrne , literally 'the stake-thorn'. It is uncertain what precisely the compound signified.Perhaps one might think of a type of thorn with a well-defined stem, useful in the construction of fencing; but if OE  *stacaþyrne were indeed a compound describing a specific type of thorn, then its nature is lost.OE  staca was sometimes used in p.ns. with the meaning 'boundary post', but it is unclear what boundary a *stacaþyrne would have indicated if this compound indeed meant 'boundary thorn', since the present township lies on the lower slope of the escarpment of the Wolds at the edge of the Vale of Belvoir, hence ~ in le Valle 1541, v. val . Note that some 16th and 17th cent. spellings show attraction to porn 'the hawthorn'.
