Etymology

'Bark's farmstead, village', v. tūn . The Scand  pers.n. Barkr , Bǫrkr is an original by-name, cf. bǫrkr (gen.sg. barkar ) 'bark'. Bark occurs as a by-name in Sweden, while a settler in Iceland bore the name Bǫrkr , v. SPNLY 48. In this Leics. p.n., the OE  gen.sg. Barkes has replaced the normal Scand  gen.sg. Barkar . Note the typical Leics. loss of t from the group -ston in the early 18th cent. form Backson . For the 15th and 16th cent. affix ~ in le Vale (with various spellings), v. val and Redmile supra .
