Etymology
'The portion of the Wolds district endowed for the support of priests', v. prēost (prēosta gen.pl.), wald . Income from livestock and woodland on this area of the wold country would have been permanently endowed by a wealthy magnate for the support of a community of priests who ministered intermittently at various churches built in different parts of his estates.
Spellings with -waud for -wald are due to AN influence.
