Mattock Hill

Field in the Parish of Oadby

Historical Forms

  • Mattock Hill 1635 Terrier
  • Mattack 1722 Terrier

Etymology

Mattock Hill 1635, (upon) Mattock 1661, 1697, Mattack 1722 (this f.n. may be a later form of Magott (hill ?) supra; if so, ME   maðek' a maggot' (either from an unrecorded OE   maðuc or ON   maðkr) has replaced magotte' a maggot' (poss. through some metathetic process); ME   mattok, the agricultural tool for loosening hard ground and grubbing up trees etc., seems much less likely as a simplex)
