Gegecros l. 13 (v. cros; with ME   gegge, a contemptuous term for beggars, hence the cross was a place where the indigent gathered; perh. explains le Scheld ad le Cros in Cosby f. ns. (b), as a shelter for the poor beside a roadside cross)
