targett' a light round shield' was poss. used with reference to the shape of the enclosure, since target in the sense' a round mark for shooting at' is not recorded until 1757 OED); (le) Thorpgate 1492 (× 2), Thorpe gate 1703 (v. gata; the road to Thorpe Langton which lies 2 miles to the north)
